Do you remember that meme when of song edits that sounded like they were playing from another room?

I don’t know if Mr Brightside was the first, but it was certainly the best. Even now, nearly a decade later, I still have the same visceral reaction. And judging by the comments on the YouTube video that now has over 1 million views, I am hardly alone. Everything is some variation of “Homecoming, when you needed to walk out of the room to cry because your date stood you up” or “HOW IS THIS MAKING EVERYONE FEEL SO MANY THINGS”. It's nice to be alive.

I have a new single out today. It’s called Stuck With You. I was not thinking about Mr Brightside in another room when I was making this song. But it's the first thing that came to mind now that I need to write about it.

Stuck With You came out of some late night audio experiments (read: half-cut and messing around in Ableton). I had set up an effect chain that emulated a VHS tape machine and I was just running various splice samples through it, pitching them up and down, speeding them up, slowing them down and seeing what came out the other side. I was getting lost in this grainy, distorted static and the feeling of melancholy and nostalgia it evoked. It was fun to just run different sounds through it. Eventually I stumbled upon the vocal sample that's the feature of Stuck With You. It was in a country music vocal sample pack alongside the pedal steel sample that's the other feature of the song. So I guess in a way it's a country song.

As the track came together it left me with the image of a lonely space traveller, lightyears from Earth, picking up grainy, decades old radio and TV signals. Connected through a faint media single, but alone and far away. And that’s what reminded me of Mr Brightside from another room. That feeling of being connection and belonging in the macro scale human experience through a song while simultaneously feeling disconnected and alienated from the people around us.
