Transit Habitat EP - Out Now
After months of work my debut EP Transit Habitat is finally out in the world!
I’m really proud of this little project. There’s something about putting an EP together that just feels better than releasing singles.
For me, Transit Habitat is about exploration. I’ve been exploring new tools, new techniques and new processes in search of sounds that feel original, but most importantly evoke a feeling or an image of a place, real or imagined. I like build up these textures with layers of sounds that envelop you.
And I think that sense of exploration is what ties these songs together into an EP. These are cinematic and evocative tracks that I hope conjure worlds and transport the listener into them.
When I was young I dreamed of being an astronaut. As long as I can remember I’ve been fascinated with space and the universe. I was always a “but why?” kid, and when you’re looking at space you’re only ever a couple of “but whys” away from “we literally do not know”. Our monkey brains can not see or comprehend “spacetime”.
But as I spent more time on Earth, I found that sense of awe and wonder is in plentiful supply here too. Maybe even more so. Did you know that dung beetles use the Milky Way to navigate? Or that there are birds that are better at predicting hurricanes than our best computer modelling? Trees event talk to each other and share resources. Life is pretty cool and the things we don’t know about it far outweigh the things we do.
I have spent most of my adult life writing, organising and campaigning about the climate crisis. So there's a sadness and an anger underpinning this EP too. A handful of billionaires are committing the greatest crime against life one could imagine. They have already caused the extinction of countless life forms and permanently changed the chemistry of the planet. Temperatures will continue to rise and the threat to life continues to grow. All because some coal, oil and gas companies would rather destroy life than stop making money. And despite our best efforts we haven’t yet found a way to stop them.
I try to be an optimist about this. We can, and must, continue to organise against these reckless and destructive billionaires and the forces of fascism and hate they have unleashed in defence of their hoards of wealth. Social movements and organised workers are capable of shifting what is politically possible, and doing it quickly. But this requires a commitment from all of us to join in that collective work of resisting.
But still, I carry a profound sense of grief. Every year the disasters escalate, as we were warned by scientists they would. Yet every year governments around the world, including here, approve new coal, oil and gas extraction despite the irrefutable evidence that it will kill millions. At the same time news rooms are cutting climate reporting and tech companies flood our brains with AI propaganda and brain rotting slop. Times are tough.
So I end the EP with William Shatner reflecting on his trip to space. The one that ended with Jeff Bezos being a complete dick. Our planet really is beautiful. We are beautiful. We should feel the grief at what we have already lost and let that fuel our anger to fight for what we still can save.
As you can see, I’m really bad at writing “marketing copy”. I came here to tell you about my new EP and I went on a rant about fossil fuel billionaires. But thankfully I was able to enlist the help of my wonderful partner, Cat, who helped write some grandiose words about my music.
Transit Habitat EP:
Naarm based independent artist Savoyager presents his anticipated first EP, Transit Habitat, an odyssey of sonic landscapes, evocative textures and driving rhythms.
Savoyager’s unique production skills are on full display as rich and evocative soundscapes envelop the listener. As the EP unfolds we are transported through a world of gleaming digital production, organic field recordings and warm analog synthesisers. Savoyager is pushing the limits of sound synthesis and design, exploring the boundaries of technology and contrasting them with the random, organic sounds of nature, embracing contradiction in a search for balance and harmony.
The EP’s titular track is an unlikely garden oasis, hurtling through space and time. A masterclass in pace and structure, this track invites you to chart a beating path as you get lost in glassy synths and evolving soundscapes on a journey into deep space.
Getaway Plan takes us deeper and darker. Driven by a pulsating rhythm, Getaway Plan races through the streets of an unknown planet, as soaring slide guitars lead us towards unknown horizons with a sense of opportunity and dread.
Overview Blues returns us back to Earth, as an ambient field recording evolves into a lush ambient soundscape. Returning from the emptiness of space, Overview Blues reminds us that everything we love is down here on earth and it needs us to fight for it.
Savoyager’s debut EP is a mature and bold offering, showcasing his ability to harness the transportational power of sound to produce rich evocative tapestries, mature and eloquent songs with a clear point of view.
